The small SUV segment is one of the most popular and competitive in the automotive market, with many models offering a blend of practicality, style, and efficiency. Skoda, one of the leading brands in the Volkswagen Group, has recently entered this segment with its new model, the Skoda Kamiq.
The Skoda Kamiq is the smallest SUV in Skoda’s lineup, following the larger Kodiaq and Karoq models. It is based on the same platform as the Volkswagen T-Cross and the SEAT Arona, but it has its own distinctive design and features. It also offers more interior space than many of its rivals, such as the Nissan Juke or the Volkswagen T-Cross.
The Skoda Kamiq was launched in 2019 in Europe and Australia and has received positive reviews from critics and customers alike. It has also achieved a full five-star rating from Euro NCAP in its crash tests, with high scores in all categories. We will look closer at what makes the Skoda Kamiq a strong contender in the small SUV segment.
Design and Features
The 2024 Skoda Kamiq has a refreshed exterior design, giving it a more rugged SUV appeal than some competitors. The front grille is larger and more upright, while the headlights are slimmer and feature optional matrix LED technology that can adjust the beam to avoid dazzling other drivers. The rear bumper has a chunkier look, while the taillights have a new L-shaped signature. The Skoda lettering on the tailgate is also slimmer and more angular.
The Skoda Kamiq also offers new alloy wheel designs, ranging from 16 to 18 inches in size, and nine new paint colors to choose from. The Monte Carlo trim level adds gloss black accents, unique wheels, and sports seats to the mix.
Inside, the Skoda Kamiq has subtle changes that enhance its functionality and comfort. The digital instrument cluster is now standard on all models, with an 8-inch screen that can be upgraded to a 10.25-inch display.
The climate control panel has been revised for easier use, while the upholstery, flooring, and mats have been made from recycled and natural materials, such as hemp and kenaf. The Skoda Kamiq also offers adjustable LED ambient lighting, wireless smartphone charging, and a power tailgate with hands-free opening.
Performance and Economy
The Kamiq is powered by a choice of three petrol engines: a 1.0-liter turbocharged three-cylinder with either 94 or 108 horsepower or a 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder with 148 horsepower. All engines come with either a six-speed manual or a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.
The Skoda Kamiq is not a sporty SUV but delivers adequate performance for most situations. The 1.0-liter engine is sufficient for city driving but can struggle on highways or hills. The 1.5-liter engine is more responsive and flexible, offering better acceleration and overtaking ability.
The Kamiq’s fuel economy is on par with other cars in its class. The most frugal engine on offer is the 115hp 1.6-liter TDI diesel engine with a manual gearbox, which returns a claimed 56.5mpg on average (53.3mpg for the DSG automatic). The Skoda Kamiq 1.0 TSI 95hp has a turbocharged Inline 3-cylinder engine, Petrol motor, with the engine code CHZB, and has a fuel consumption of 5.1 liters/100km - 55 mpg UK - 46 mpg US (Average). The Kamiq requires a minimum 95 RON premium unleaded or E10 fuel (94RON), claiming an official combined fuel consumption figure of 5.6L/100km.
Price and Value
The Skoda Kamiq is expected to go on sale with prices starting from around $32,000. It will compete with other small SUVs such as the Hyundai Creta, Nissan Kicks, Renault Captur, Maruti Suzuki S-Cross, Kia Seltos, and the second-gen Dacia Duster.
The Skoda Kamiq offers great value for money compared to some of its rivals, as it comes with a generous list of standard features and a five-year warranty. Some of the highlights include LED headlights and tail lights, an 8-inch digital instrument cluster, an 8.25-inch infotainment screen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, power tailgate, rear parking sensors, cruise control, lane-keeping assist, autonomous emergency braking, and six airbags.
The Skoda Kamiq is a new challenger in the small SUV segment and has much to offer. It has a spacious, comfortable, high-quality interior, smooth and efficient performance, and advanced technology features. It also has a stylish, rugged exterior design, a high safety rating, and a competitive price.
The Skoda Kamiq is not the most exciting or stylish SUV in its class, but it is one of the most practical, refined, and value-packed. It is a great choice for buyers who want a versatile, comfortable, and reliable vehicle that can handle the demands of everyday life.
